Radar sensor systems for ports

The only radar sensor supplier surveilling the major ports of all regions of the world from north to south and east to west.

Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and Coastal Surveillance

At Terma, we have delivered and installed numerous radar sensor systems worldwide since the early 1990s - initially tailored for VTS applications in ports and waterways where the increased vessel traffic in congested areas called for improved monitoring and surveillance - essentially for economic and safety reasons. Later, port authorities have been forced to tighten up surveillance requirements to encompass security.

Similarly, state sovereignty, EEZ surveillance, preventing illegal migratory and drug trafficking, etc. are nowadays important issues in many countries. The requirements for capable and reliable sensor systems have increased correspondingly, and so far, we have been able to follow this trend in developing radar sensor systems tailored for these exact purposes.

Inland Waterways

Radar Surveillance

Inland waterways are being monitored with cameras and other surveillance equipment suited for visual monitoring. But in poor weather - rain, fog, or darkness - the visual equipment is of no use and radar surveillance is the only proper form of surveillance.

Port Surveillance

At Terma, we have gained significant experience in the design of radars for the port surveillance application in connection with several projects. Today, we are able to deliver a number of different system configurations fulfilling the recommendations under the IALA recommendation V-128. Consequently, we are well prepared to cope with both existing and future requirements.

Radar benefits

  • Safety first
  • Co-operative targets
  • Active monitoring with radar, CCTV,MET, AIS, etc.
  • Traffic management
  • Navigational advice and guidance
  • Inland waterways, confined and busy waterways
  • Preventing collisions, pollution, and groundings
  • Expedite ship movements - increases efficiency
  • All weather operating capability
  • Supports Search & Rescue operations
  • High availability with redundancy.

Several other features such as programmable Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF), Pulse Width (PW), and random PRF stagger are available to enable task-specific setup.

SCANTER radars

The SCANTER 2000 Series Radar is an X-band, 2D, fully coherent pulse compression radar, based on Solid State transmitter technology with digital software-defined functionality. The outdoor transceiver unit can be placed up-mast close to the antenna to minimize waveguide loss between antenna and transceiver.

The SCANTER 2000 radar series offers detection of small targets in all weather conditions.

It is especially suited for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), river, and inner port surveillance. The outdoor transceiver unit is very small, weighs only 26 kg, and can be placed up-mast close to the antenna to minimize installation requirements and costs as well as waveguide loss between antenna and transceiver to acheive a highly efficient solution.

The SCANTER 2000 series provides a fully integrated solution with automated processing and low lifetime cost.

SCANTER 2200 benefits

  • Based on Terma’s high-quality and state-of-the-art radar technology
  • Small and efficient - weighs only 26 kg
  • Easy integration – standard IP network
  • Low installation life-time cost

SCANTER 5102/5201 benfits

  • Frequency Diversity (FD) processing to de-correlate sea clutter, reduce small target fluctuation and loobing effect, thereby improving the long-range detection
  • Auto-Adaptive Sensitivity Control (ASC) to provide automatic two-dimensional STC, eliminating the need for operator setting of the radar during normal operation
  • Pulse-to-pulse integration to improve signal-to-noise ration for improved
  • small target detection
  • Digital FTC and sweep-to-sweep correlation
  • Affordable and flexible solutions
  • Easy operation
  • Easy installation
  • Hardly no maintenance.

Requirements

IALA Standard recommendations

The SCANTER 2000 Series meets the requirements for professional VTS applications, where quality and durability is significant. With a Terma 18’ Compact antenna, it meets the IALA Standard recommendations up to 48 nmi. The transceiver also works with smaller antennas meeting requirements, typically for ports and VTS gap-filling.

Vessel Traffic Services radar products

The SCANTER product range comprises the SCANTER 5000 Solid State Pulse Compression Series radar; the SCANTER 4000 combined Sea and Air Surveillance radar, and the latest development, the SCANTER 2000 Series Radar, utilizing solid state technology and processing gained from the renowned SCANTER 2001 Radar.

SCANTER 4000

The SCANTER 4000 radar system provides simultaneous sea surface coverage and medium-range air surveillance. To achieve reliable target detection both in the air and at sea surface, the SCANTER 4000 radar system is designed as a two-channel, 2-D, coherent radar with pulse compression and MTI processing. The radar has one common transmitter for surface and air and two independent receivers - one for signal processing and surface targets and one for signal processing and air targets. The instrumented range of the SCANTER 4000 air channel is up to 100 NMI. The maximum range for surface detection is limited by the earth curvature and propagation conditions.

SCANTER 5000 Series

The SCANTER 5000 Series Solid State radar for ground surveillance applications - coastal surveillance, port surveillance, and surface movement surveillance in airports.

The SCANTER 5202 radar system is an X-band, 2-D, pulse compression radar, based on Solid State transmitter technology with digital software defined functionality. The SCANTER 5202 meets the requirements for professional VTS and coastal surveillance services, where quality and durability is significant. Surface and short-range, low-level air coverage and helicopter control is provided in harsh weather conditions. An embedded tracker is offered as an add-on feature.
