Terma and SEA to Develop Combined Countermeasures Capability

Global leader in advanced radar and defense systems, Terma and leading UK ship and fleet protection specialist SEA have announced the development of a combined naval countermeasures solution at Euronaval 2024.

Building on the partnership agreement signed in October 2024, the combined countermeasures capability will provide a broader range of vessels and fleets access to the latest countermeasures technology.

Leveraging SEA’s trainable decoy launcher system, Ancilia, and the technology from Terma’s C-Guard rapid response and constant threat evaluation capability, the combined countermeasures solution will provide an intelligent end-to-end capability ensuring enhanced fleet protection against multiple missiles and torpedoes for navies around the world.

A step-change in decoy launcher technology from traditional fixed solutions, Ancilia’s trainable nature removes the need to manoeuvre the vessel to counter incoming threats. Its relatively small size and weight also allows for rapid installation on a wide range of maritime platforms. Incorporating decoy-agnostic open architecture, the system can launch any standard 130mm NATO decoy, and other calibres of effectors, and can be retrofitted onto existing platforms delivering a truly flexible solution.

Terma’s next-generation C-Guard MK II naval decoy system now features the Ancilia trainable launcher, offering a total of four launcher options. This flexible configuration allows naval vessels to combine both fixed and trainable launchers, enhancing defense capabilities. By integrating advanced threat evaluation and engagement algorithms developed by AI with a new tactical display for managing variable RCS and hull configurations, C-Guard MKII delivers cutting-edge countermeasures. The system, along with the added trainable Ancilia launcher, provides seamless integration with a ship’s combat management system, making it accessible to a wider range of vessels and fleets.

Richard Flitton, Managing Director of SEA said: “In a rapidly evolving landscape with diverse threats, Ancilia and C-Guard MK II bring together two leading countermeasures capability to offer the cutting-edge technology to older vessels. With Ancilia soon to be in service with a tier one navy and C-Guard used globally, the combined capability will provide next level protection for vessels currently reliant on older technology.”

Martin Couët, Vice President, Global Sales at Terma said: “Our new and improved C-Guard MK II with the Ancilia trainable launcher from SEA will offer navies across the world access to an integrated countermeasures solution, with the capability of incorporating both fixed and trainable launchers. Our partnership with SEA will deliver a truly integrated and customer driven countermeasures capability.”

SEA has recently been awarded a £135m contract by the UK Royal Navy to provide its Ancilia capability to improve the defensive capabilities of the Royal Navy’s surface ships.
