New radar systems for South African Vessel Traffic Service Systems
The Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) systems in six South African ports will be upgraded with 11 new SCANTER radar systems.

The Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) systems in six South African ports will be upgraded with 11 new SCANTER radar systems from Danish radar provider Terma.
Terma recently entered into a contract with main supplier Marine Data Solutions. The contract comprises seven SCANTER 5102 50 W Solid State X-Band Transceivers with 18ft High Gain Slotted Waveguide antennas, and four SCANTER 2001 Single Frequency X-Band Transceivers with 18ft Compact Gain Slotted Waveguide antennas.
All systems are to be delivered and installed this year.
Approx. 10 years ago, Terma supplied a number of radar systems for Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) purposes in South Africa. The systems will now be replaced with new ones, and the capacity will thus be increased.
“We are confident that Transnet National Ports Authority being one of the first customers to implement SCANTER 5000 radars in a VTS system will benefit from the upgrading to SCANTER 5102 and thereby obtain increased coverage, improved resolution of the radar image, and less maintenance”, says Ole Pannerup, Sales & Key Account Manager, Radar Systems Sales, Terma.
