BAE Systems and Terma continue collaboration
Terma and BAE Systems have agreed to continue and intensify their collaboration on helmet audio advances.
Lystrup, Denmark - Following a recently conducted successful design review, Terma and BAE Systems agreed to continue and intensify their collaboration on helmet audio advances.
In 2015, the two firms entered into a joint development agreement to integrate Terma’s 3D-Audio/Active Noise Reduction (ANR) technology with BAE Systems’ Striker® II Helmet Mounted Display (HMD).
Airborne or acoustically transmitted noise is always present in aircraft, but measures can be taken to reduce it. Terma's ANR solution is highly adaptable and supports even the noisiest aircraft platforms. The technology can reduce pilot fatigue, hearing loss and improve speech intelligibility.
3D-Audio helps pilots deal with threat warnings within a complete 360 degree sphere of the aircraft. It alerts them from the exact direction of the danger and also when a threat changes path, which is particularly important in the case of missiles and thereby offering improved situational awareness and survivability.
Terma and BAE Systems will continue work on a 3D-Audio/ANR headset for demonstration with BAE Systems’ helmet, followed by final product development. The companies will then perform aircraft integration and certification before serial helmet production commences.
As part of ongoing marketing efforts for the joint offering, BAE Systems will showcase Terma’s 3D-Audio/ANR solution as part of its Striker® II HMD demonstration at the annual Weapons and Tactics Conference (WEPTAC) in Tucson, AZ.
3D-Audio/ANR technologies will also be installed at BAE Systems’ simulation facility in Rochester, UK, and its flight test center in Warton, UK. The development of an ANR flight test kit is also included in the agreement, which will enable prospective customers to “test drive” the technology before making any purchasing decisions.
