Terma provides ground surveillance radar for security at Port Canaveral, Florida

Arlington, VA – After a successful demonstration in late summer 2015, Terma North America (Terma) supplied Port Canaveral, FL with a ground surveillance radar for protecting critical infrastructure and monitoring small vessel traffic in and around the port facility.

Port Canaveral, located in Brevard County, Florida, is one of the busiest cruise, cargo, and naval ports in the world with 3.9 million cruise passengers and over 3,000,000 short tons of bulk cargo traffic passing through each year.

The port’s critical infrastructure and inland waterways are currently monitored with cameras and other sensor equipment suited for visual surveillance. But in poor weather (i.e. rain, fog) or darkness, visual sensors are ineffective.

The preferred sensor for protecting critical infrastructure within and around the port is the SCANTER 1002, a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), solid state radar that can detect and track moving targets on both land and at sea.

Through a combination of advanced technology, the SCANTER 1002 is specifically tailored to detect and track fast moving vehicles and slow moving personnel in and around high-sensitivity areas and critical infrastructure under a variety of extreme weather conditions without having to change profiles. The radar is also capable of detecting small, non-cooperative boat traffic that might go undetected by other sensors.

“The ability to provide 360 degree coverage, day or night, in any weather condition was a critical factor in the port’s decision to choose the SCANTER 1002”, says Jeff Schleicher, Manager, Business Development for Terma’s Command, Control, and Sensors business unit.

Built on a network-based open architecture communicating via a standard TCP/IP network (LAN or WAN), the SCANTER 1002 has been installed as an integral part of the existing security systems at the facility, providing enhanced situational awareness to the existing command and control system utilized by the port.

 “The ability to detect targets on both land and water as well as provide seamless integration with the port’s new and existing infrastructure was an added bonus”, says Schleicher.
