Visualizing Electronic Warfare using Virtual Reality, VR.

Paris, Le Bourget – This year, Virtual Reality (VR) really became mainstream. The development in hardware capabilities, head tracking, and software now facilitates fluent and convincing 3D experiences.

On display at Terma’s stand at Paris Air Show are several Terma aircraft self-protection solutions in a new and lively virtual reality setup. This includes aircraft survivability equipment fielded on F-16s, light attack aircraft, CH-47 Chinook and AH-64 Apache helicopters from the pilot's view.

Virtual Reality offers unique ways of displaying the capabilities of Terma’s products and solutions, by showcasing them in virtual environments similar to the real-life environments in which the products are used. For example, customers can experience a virtual F-16 flight where Terma’s electronic warfare (EW) system is demonstrated in a realistic scenario.

Augmented Reality is an emerging technology that offers virtual overlay of information on top of real-world products or environments. This part of the project will focus on increasing the maturity level of AR technology when used in a production setting.

“Initially, our goal was to determine how well the AR technology can help production workers, e.g. if the technology can contribute to reducing scrap due to errors. We will explore the use of the AR technology in a production setting at our F-35 composite manufacturing facility, explains Daniel Maass, Mechanical Engineer, Design, Terma.

To stay at the forefront and utilize these new technologies, Terma has launched a technology project in order to increase the use of visualization. This takes place through the use of interactive 3D simulators as well as AR and VR technologies and aims at increasing the maturity level of these technologies.

Meet our dedicated team at this year’s airshow at Paris Le Bourget. Meet us in Hall 3 at stand no. E16.
